From pee-wee football dropout to the #1 college
football team in the country and on to the Seattle
Seahawks – the amazing, faith-filled journey of
USC’s real-life Rudy.
Young, undersized Ben Malcolmson hates pee-wee football
and begs his parents to quit. Years later, as a student
sports reporter for the Daily Trojan, Ben covers the
#1 USC football team coached by Pete Carroll.
For an article about the walk-on players, Ben decides to
go through the tryouts himself – and he accidentally makes
the #1 college football team in the country.
Sensing that he’s on the team for a bigger purpose, Ben
fights through injury and ridicule to earn the respect of
his teammates, and gets into a game for one play at the
end of the season – against Notre Dame!
Despite his football success, Ben believes he’s failed to find
his bigger purpose on the team, especially after a teammate
tragically dies. But a chance encounter, years later, with
Ben now working for Pete Carroll at the Seattle Seahawks,
reveals to Ben the profound impact his faith, and his friendship,
had on his teammates.
The Try Out – Young Ben Malcolmson is mocked and
ridiculed as a pee-wee football player. Later, as a
sports reporter in college, Ben tries out for the
#1 USC football team under coach Pete Carroll, just
for an article – and he accidentally makes the squad!
Because it’s so crazy and improbable, Ben strongly
believes he’s been put on the team to fulfill a bigger
purpose, and he vows that nothing will stop him from
finding that purpose.
The Struggles – Ben has to learn how to play big-time
college football – but he doesn’t even know how to
put on his shoulder pads! Through the spring and
summer, Ben goes against his family’s advice to walk
away from the team, and instead fights through injury
and humiliation to stay with the Trojans. Unfortunately,
everything he does in an effort to fulfill his greater
purpose seems to come up short and ends in failure.
The Failures – Ben’s fraternity brothers start a
“Get Ben In” campaign to get him into a game.
And it all culminates under the lights in the Coliseum
at the last home game of the season against archrival
Notre Dame. Then one of Ben’s best friends on
the team suddenly dies in a tragic accident, and
Ben feels like an absolute disappointment, that he’s
completely missed God’s purpose for him on the team,
and in his friend’s life.
The Surprise Success – Pete Carroll hires Ben to manage
the new, emerging social media for the team, and brings
Ben with him a few years later when he moves to the
NFL and the Seahawks. There, in Seattle, a chance
encounter with an old USC teammate reveals to Ben
that God really did have a profound purpose for Ben
on the team, and that what Ben thought were his biggest
failures were actually his greatest successes!
